CHESS in School Program
First was at Columban College Elementary Department (Main Campus) thru Mr. Rodel Cannu their Sports Coordinator and thru Mr. Emil Quinto our Sports Director at that time.
I was stunned when I saw a huge attendance of young players who wants to learn chess.
The Second School was Ilalim Elementary School under Mrs. Elvira Corpuz their School Principal the number of trainees is not the same as in Columban College but they are all willing to learn chess.
This program continued and I gave lectures / trainings and I even sponsored tournaments for the kids in order for them to exercise the knowledge they acquired during the training sessions.
I was very happy that time because not only the players, parents and teachers supported every tournament I conducted at Ilalim Elementary School, it was also supported by our very own Chess National Master Atty. Edmundo Legaspi and currently one of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines Director.
He is always there in the tournament to show the support to thekids.
Unfortunately, all is not forever this program was halted in Columban College Elementary Department bythe School Principal for some reason I do not know why, to this effect I cancelled all trainings and lectures on both schools, what a sad ending.
Year 2010 September when I asked my former varsity player Mr. Glenn Garcia who is now currently teaching in Columban College, Barretto Campus, if he has time to start the Chess in School Program. The same year, me and the Founding President of G4 Chess Club Mr. Joel Pineda talked about this activity which will help our students to Build their Confidence and to empower the children to success.
Preparations went through careful study and we had some critical comments on the materials to be used for the kids and it was completed successfully by Mr. Glenn Garcia and Ms. Christine Joy Pineda.
The first beneficiary of this program was Olongapo Wesley School S_OWS) thru the help and coordination of Mr. Leonel Aduran.
It was successfully conducted and the kids while learning were also enjoying.
We hope that this program will continue and many schools in Olongapo City and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) area after reading my articles will be encouraged to participate in our chess program and we envision that in the coming years we can produce Grandmasters like GM Wesley So and GM Oliver Barbosa who both are currently members of the Philippine Chess Team.
Also we will keep you posted for the upcoming G4 Chess Club Lecture Series which will be conducted by none other than yours truly.
This Lecture Series will focus on the Modern Techniques and Strategies using the latest Chessbase11.
