Blockbusters are back in a big way! Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, despite not being the top grosser of 2023 (that crown goes to the surprise hit, Barbie!), is making waves for being the first major box office draw to win Best Picture at the Oscars in nearly two decades. This win, coupled with the success of last December’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), points towards a resurgence of moviegoing enthusiasm, both abroad and here in the Philippines. Remember how cinemas were hesitant to hold on to MMFF entries after the pandemic? This time, audiences are demanding more, proving they’re ready to return to the immersive experience of the big screen.
So, it’s really a matter of content. Give the public an entertaining time, and they’re ready to return to movie watching as a shared, community experience. Whether it’s a new horror film, action adventure, or comedy, movies are that much more enjoyable when shared with others, experiencing the reactions of the audience around you. You just don’t get that when watching at home.
And SM Cinema, always ahead of the curve, knows this. That’s why several of your favorite neighborhood SM Cinemas have been renovated and technologically upgraded. They now challenge the best cinemas found anywhere in the world. New plush seats, higher-resolution equipment, and improved sound quality make the experience even more immersive. Plus, the ticket buying areas and refreshment stands have all received a makeover as well. It’s well worth a visit if you haven’t been lately.
Get ready, because the blockbusters of 2024 are on their way. Dune Part Two was just the first salvo. On Black Saturday, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opens, followed by horror with The First Omen the following week!
Here’s what to watch in May, because it’s jam-packed with exciting releases. First up on May 1st is The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt (who coincidentally starred in Barbie and Oppenheimer, respectively). This action-rom-com has received rave reviews and promises great chemistry between the leads. For a dose of family fun, Ryan Reynolds brings IF (Imaginary Friends) to mid-May. And for fans of sci-fi epics, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes swings into theaters later that month.
But wait, there’s more! May also brings us supernatural thrills with Tarot on May 1st, the highly anticipated prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth hitting screens on May 22nd, and a return to lasagna-loving laughs with The Garfield Movie hitting theaters on May 29th. With Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire kicking things off in IMAX 2D on April 10th, it’s a sure bet that 2024 is shaping up to be a year to remember at the cinema!
For fans of K-Drama and K-Horror, SM Cinema is the place to watch The Wild, Exhuma, Demon Dog, Citizen of a Kind, and Midnight Sun. Anime fans will be delighted to hear that Skye Hoshi: Anime Girl and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom are SM exclusives!
There’s so much to look forward to movie-wise in the months ahead, and we haven’t even talked about Filipino productions such as Sunny, Under Parallel Skies, G! LU! (Go La Union), and Men Are From QC, Women are from Alabang.
See you at your neighborhood SM Cinema, Director’s Club, or IMAX theater.

Subic Bay Freeport—SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, along with Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino, Jr. and Zambales Board Member Rundsted Ebdane graced the formal opening of the MV Doulos Hope at the Riviera Wharf on Tuesday of this premier Freeport.
MV Doulos Hope Captain Tom Dyer and Director Nathan Schmutz assisted Aliño during the opening of the former cruise ship, turned floating library.”
“Not everyone is fortunate to experience the surreal feeling of being immersed into a sea of literature that suits everyone. As I took my first step aboard MV Doulos Hope, I immediately felt that warm sense of belonging,” Aliño said.
“This rare visit is an ideal opportunity to spread God’s love and goodness through shared knowledge, community engagement and by simply participating in spiritual-enhancing activities, which aim to bring hope to the world amidst cultural and religious differences,” he said.
The chairman also shared that during the visit of sister ship MV Logos Hope in Subic Bay in 2015 with 400 crewmembers coming from across the globe, thousands of visitors from all walks of life were able to browse thru, marvel at and buy literature at a fraction of its cost.
Aliño said that the moniker Doulos Hope, which means servant of hope, is befitting of the title of this new ship. He added that the former cruise ship, the MV Doulos Hope is now a floating library owned by the faith-based organization Gute Bücher für Alle or Good Books for All (GBA) that will be open to the public starting February 13, will stay in Subic Bay until March 3 before sailing on to San Fernando, La Union.
Zambales Board Member Ebdane, who attended for Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., said, “A book is a special gift like no other, because you can open it again and again. It’s a portable magic tool that uplifts your spirit once you start reading it.”
He encouraged everyone to take advantage of the limited opportunities Doulos Hope brings, adding that anyone can explore a wide range of books for low prices, while also having a chance to meet, connect and engage with the international crew.
Captain Dryer expressed his gratitude to the officials, citing that their cooperation provides assistance in promoting the MV Doulos Hope to the people in their localities. He also acknowledged the SBMA personnel for their warm welcome during their arrival here.
MV Doulos Hope ended her final cruise in Singapore in late 2009. The ship was turned over to its new owners on March 18, 2010 and was converted into a luxury hotel, which opened in Indonesia in June 2019.
In late 2022, MV Doulos Hope was repurposed from being a cruise ship owned by the German charity Gute Bücher für Alle (Good Books for All), into a floating library.
After completion of a refit, Doulos Hope will be based in a Southeast Asian port from 2023 to provide a floating library service to complement its sister ship, the MV Logos Hope. (mysubicbay.com.ph)

The Community Arts Program at CASA San Miguel trains local talents primarily in stringed orchestral instruments and the visual arts in conjunction with a residency program that offers young Filipino artists opportunities to perform and exhibit.

It was designed by violinist Coke Bolipata in 1993 for children in the fishing village after the devastation of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 to address the need for an educational and training program to develop community-based support for an arts center.

The program trains local talents
primarily in stringed orchestral instruments and the visual arts in conjunction
with a residency program that offers young Filipino artists opportunities to
perform and exhibit.

The program has since expanded
its reach to include gifted students from other parts of the country including
Manila, Pampanga, Baguio, Pangasinan, Samar, and Davao.

HOUSTON, Texas – Despite a violent moment at the 2022 Academy Awards where Best Actor winner Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock in the face, it was a historical night at the Oscars on Sunday.

Ariana DeBose became the first Afro-Latina and first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar, picking up the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in the Steven Spielberg remake of West Side Story.

“Yikes! What is this?” said DeBose. “Now you see why Anita wants to be in America because even in this weary world we live in, dreams come true.”

DeBose’s win comes exactly 60 years after Rita Moreno won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her same role in the original West Side Story.
“Your Anita paved the way for tons of Anitas like me,” DeBose said, paying tribute to Moreno, who won her Oscar in 1962.

In another first, Troy Kotsur became the first deaf male actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult), a film about a teenage girl who is the only hearing member of her family learning to connect with her deaf parents and brother through singing.

“This is dedicated to the deaf community, the CODA community, and the disabled community. This is our moment,” said Kotsur. “I really want to thank all of the wonderful deaf theater stages where I was allowed and given the opportunity to develop my craft as an actor.”

Marlee Matlin, Kotsur’s wife in the film, became the first deaf actor to win an Academy Award in 1987. Matlin won the Best Actress Oscar for the film Children of a Lesser God.

CODA also took home the top prize of the night, winning Best Picture Oscar over a crowded nomination field of 10 films.

In addition, Sian Heder, who wrote and directed CODA, picked up an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film.

“I want to thank all of my collaborators in the deaf community, in the CODA community, for being my teachers,” she said.

Jessica Chastain won her first Oscar for Best Actress, playing the role of glitzy televangelist Tammy Faye Messner in the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

She used her acceptance speech to point out challenges being faced by the LGBT community in the US “who oftentimes feel out of place with their peers.”

“We’re faced with discriminatory and bigoted legislation that is sweeping our country with the only goal of further dividing us,” said Chastain, “and in times like this, I think of Tammy, and I’m inspired by her radical acts of love.”

Smith took home the Oscar for Best Actor after slapping Rock across the face during an altercation earlier in the awards ceremony. He cryptically addressed the situation, referring to the character he played in the movie King Richard.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” said Smith. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father…just like they said about Richard Williams.” (Anadolu)
