THE Subic Bay Freeport Zone has a “unique” advantage in having both an airport and a seaport at the same time, according to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Sr. Deputy Administrator (SDA) Ronnie R. Yambao.

“The SBMA, as an enabler of free trade and commerce, is ready to offer its airport and port facilities as a logistics supply chain solution for the distribution of aquamarine and agricultural commodities locally and abroad,” Yambao said, “its intermodal network by land, sea and air is a game changer that will accelerate growth in the logistics sector.”

SDA Yambao made the remarks on Tuesday at Subic’s Mansion Garden Hotel during the Philippine Aquamarine and Agriculture Development Concession Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony that aims to put up a “state of the art” Logistics Hub in the Freeport.

The project, touted to generate trading worth some $420 M annually when launched, would bring Japan’s Tokushima Auction Market and its marketing arm Global Trade Venture (GTV) Company Ltd. to Subic.

Amin Javadi, Iran’s Ambassador to the Philippines graced the MoA signing with his presence along with senior Japanese consultants Kazuo Sato and Nobayasu Sugimoto.

“By bringing in this group that will not only be investors but will be joint venture partners of SBMA that will allow huge trading volumes,” Quijano said in the press conference that followed.

A day before, GTV/TAM had just consummated a similar MoA with the officials of the Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA) and Asia Pacific Precision Agriculture Group (ASPAC AG) in Davao City. (VVV)

LAWYER Randy B. Escolango has taken his oath this morning as Undersecretary of the Dept. of Labor & Employment (DOLE) before Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III.

USec. Randy B. Escolango

His appointment was signed by President Rodrigo R. Duterte last February 22, 2022 to fill in the permanent vacancy created by the mandatory retirement of USec. Philip A. Paredes last February 3.

“I am deeply honored and thankful to be entrusted with a very important office in the Dept. of Labor & Employment,” Escolango told Subic Bay News, “It is another avenue where I can make myself productive in helping people feel and experience the government’s sincere care and concern for their welfare and well being.”

He said it is but proper for the administration “to place the country’s labor sector among its top priorities, striking a fair and mutually acceptable balance of interest with the business sector.”

A Deputy Commissioner of the Insurance Commission (IC) since 2017 where he also headed the Legal Services Group, Escolango was Deputy Administrator of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and had a stint as Officer-in-Charge of the said Government Owned and Controlled Corp. (GOCC) before moving to the IC.

“In between, he managed to serve as a professor at the local Columban College where he first enrolled to take up AB English in 1993 before completing his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science as a Dean’s Lister from the New Era University. Earning his Master’s in Public Management in 2010, he went on to become a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration in 2014.”

Still not through with his appetite for education, Escolango is currently enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in Accountancy at Far Eastern University where he previously earned his Bachelor of Laws Degree in 2001, the same year he passed the Bar Examinations.

His various engagements in and out of government service was not a deterrent to USec. Escolango to serve as an officer of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) where he is currently a Rear Admiral. He is also president of the New Era University Alumni Association, Inc., member of the International Bar Association, Certified Treasury Professional, Accredited Financial Analyst, Professor of Law on Insurance and other Commercial Laws, and Lecturer in Mandatory Continuing Legal Education for Lawyers (MCLE). He also writes a regular column for the national newspaper The Manila Times.

USec. Escolango, 45, is married to Michelle Cortez-Escolango, a Pharmacist and businesswoman with whom he has four children, namely, Ranchelle, Marielle, Randy Jr. and Mirand.

Among his favorite dictums, USec. Escolango always puts emphasis on kindness and helping others. “Kindness and helping others will return to you when you least expect it, and maybe when you need it,” he counsels his family, friends, and anyone else who care to listen. (VVV)

NU’s Ar. Shaunn Remzzo T. Blanco, led the 1370 (out of 2205) board passers, taking the top spot with an overall rating of 83.50% in the January 2022 Architect Licensure Examination.

A son of a registered nurse and an architect, Shaunn dreamt to be an architect since he was young, “When I was a child, I (only) wanted to build my mom her dream house. But when I entered this profession, (I realized) it wasn’t just about building houses or structures, it is actually about creating these and the special experiences that everyone would remember.”

Inspired and fascinated with his father’s profession, Shaunn talked to his godfather who shared a lot of things about National U. ‘’One thing I remember was when he talked about prestigious and famous architects from NU, that’s when I realized that if National University was able to produce those architects, then they can mold me into the architect I’ve always dreamt to be.”

When asked about his parents’ reaction Shaunn said, “The moment na nakita ko yung name ko sa list of passers, hindi ko na chineck (topnotchers), friend ko pa yung nag inform sa akin that I topped the exam. I was surprised. My mother cried, pero they always knew na kaya ko ipasa. As for my father, they did not ask naman daw for this pero Top 1 pa daw ang binigay ko, so they were surprised as well.”

According to Shaunn, his secret to success in the ALE is proper conditioning of mind, body and emotions to manage stress and anxiety. “Na-realize ko na mas okay pang relaxed ako during the exams. So even sa paglabas ko ng exam room, I wasn’t really thinking of what I did wrong in the exam. Instead, I thought of it as a way for me to prove myself, regardless of the results”, he added.

The new architect shared that the Nationalian core value that he believes he possesses is integrity. He stressed that it is important in the profession because “integrity defines us and how we continue to uphold our ideals as architects.”

His advice to other professional board examinees is to “Study for future practice, not only for board exam purposes. It will be helpful if ganun yung mindset to retain information”, Shaunn said.
For more than 120 years, National University has been recognized for its academic excellence which has formed the country’s most successful movers and shakers in various industries.

National University brings quality education closer to home as it inaugurates its first campus in Central Luzon at SM City Baliwag in Bulacan. NU Baliwag is the fourth campus to open as part of the University’s ten-year expansion program.

As shared by National University Chairman Hans Sy, the NU expansion anchors on the mission of their late patriarch, Mr. Henry Sy Sr., which is to help Filipinos gain access to education.

Located at the Annex Building of SM City Baliwag, the 14,259.13square meter campus could accommodate at least 6,000 students once face-to-face class resumes. NU Baliwag aims to provide National University’s high standards of educational services not just to students in the first- Class Urban Municipality of Baliwag, but also in some parts of Bulacan, Pampanga as far as Nueva Ecija and Zambales.

In the meantime, it adapts to the new normal by virtually opening its doors to students for online classes. Last August of 2020, it introduced the Flexible Learning Experience (NU FLEX), which focuses on blending remote asynchronous and synchronous learning, a mix of scheduled classes and recorded lectures that are accessible anytime and anywhere.

NU offers wide and comprehensive programs such as BS In Business Administration Major in Marketing Management, BS In Business Administration Major in Financial Management, BS In Accountancy, BS In Tourism Management, BS In Hospitality Management, BS In Psychology, BS In Civil Engineering, BS In Computer Engineering, BS In Information Technology, and BS In Architecture. Recently, the campus opened slots for Senior High School Strands: ABM, HUMSS and STEM.

National University’s highly credible background as a provider of quality education in the country. Apart from being a Microsoft Showcase School, the campus takes pride of its state of the art facilities including simulation rooms with up-to-date equipment for specific courses, and modern computer laboratories. The campus is equipped with competent faculty members from top performing schools to ensure the highest quality classroom instruction.

For admission inquiries, interested students may contact NU Baliwag at 0919 081 4635/0927 533 0342 0923 949 5265.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Japanese manufacturing firm Nidec Subic Philippines Corporation has retrenched more than 70 percent of its workers here to maintain the viability of company operations, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) said on Wednesday.
The firm, which manufactures precision electronic equipment, direct-drive spindle motors, and specialized digital core parts for multimedia, announced the separation of 784 of its workers on Tuesday and released their separation pay as well.
“It’s sad news for us, but we hope that this will be just a temporary setback that would allow the company to weather the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy,” said SBMA Chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma.
“The company will not close down altogether,” Eisma added, pointing out that Nidec has retained 300 workers to maintain the company facilities at the Subic Techno Park here.
As of December 2020, the firm had listed 1,197 direct hires on its rolls, aside from 211 workers sourced out from a manpower provider and 36 from a security firm.
But as early as August last year, Nidec vice president for administration Tetsuya Nakao had announced business difficulties that impacted company operations at the Subic production facility.
In a letter asking the Department of Labor and Employment for exemption to the new minimum wage order, Nakao revealed that “the impact of Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected our operating expense and doubled our company expenditures on shuttle services.”
Last December, Nidec deputy general manager for administration Daisy Mae Jaucian informed SBMA Labor Department manager Melvin Varias that the firm will cut down on its employees, citing the closure of their base production of spindle motors effective February 5, 2021.
“We find that we must reduce our workforce to ensure the financial stability of the company,” Jaucian said. “We have always valued and continue to value the contributions of all our employees and deeply regret the need for this action.”
Varias said that Nidec had asked assistance from the SBMA for the profiling of the displaced workers for any job opening in the Subic Bay Freeport.
In response, Varias said the SBMA has identified a total of 254 job vacancies among 15 companies in the Freeport as of January 6 for which the retrenched workers may apply.
The available positions included, among others, 150 production operators and 15 quality control personnel in a shoe factory; 21 engineer, operator and inspector positions in a computer manufacturing firm; and production planners in another Japanese firm.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — A second swab test on a female foreigner turned negative only three (3) days after she tested positive of Covid -19 in her first test, raising doubts on the accuracy of the tests even from swab samples.

“The 44-year-old female foreigner who tested positive from swab samples taken on Aug. 25, underwent another swabbing on Aug. 28 and the results of her second RT-PCR test released on Aug. 29 indicated she is negative of the Covid-19 virus,” Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman Wilma T. Eisma said in a statement on Tuesday.

Subic Bay Freeport residents found positive of the virus as of last report was at ten (10) with six (6) active cases and four (4) recoveries, while all four (4) SBMA employees infected are still active cases, according to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman Wilma T. Eisma. SubicBayNews photo by Vic V. Vizcocho, Jr.

Tagged as patient SBFZ-G09 for being classified as a “guest worker,” she “displayed mild symptoms” and “was admitted to a hospital in the Subic Bay Freeport,” Eisma said without disclosing which hospital in an earlier statement.

A subsequent statement from Eisma said “she is now in a quarantine hotel to complete a 14-day isolation period.”

A Subic Freeport doctor consulted by Subic Bay News who requested not to be named for lack of authority to speak on the matter, said there is “no definitive explanation” as to why a test result could reverse in a matter of three (3) days.

The positive reading on the female foreigner prompted the SBMA Public Health and Safety Department to order the lockdown of the company where she works, as well as the mass testing, at the company’s expense, of all 132 personnel in the compound, described by Eisma as an “industrial-residential facility.”

Despite the negative 2nd test result of the female foreigner, however, the mass testing revealed three (3) more covid-19 positive results in the “industrial-residential facility” which include a 2-year-old boy (SBFZ-G12), a 10-year-old girl (SBFZ-G11), both children of different stay-in workers, and a 28-year-old male foreigner (SBFZ-G10), also a stay-in worker.

As with the female foreigner, SBFZ-G10’s nationality was not revealed in Eisma’s statement.

Contact tracing allegedly has not yet been completed to determine if the contaminations were related.

As of Tuesday (Sept. 1), the total confirmed Covid-19 cases among SBFZ-guests/transient workers has risen to twelve (12), with five (5) active cases and seven (7) recoveries.

Subic Bay Freeport residents found positive of the virus as of last report was at ten (10) with six (6) active cases and four (4) recoveries, while four (4) SBMA employees infected are all still active cases, according to Eisma.

“Again, we advise all stakeholders of the Subic Bay Freeport to exercise further caution, strictly observe health protocols, and practice health safety measures both in workplaces and at home. (VVV)
