60 MINUTES OF DARKNESS AT SM CITY OLONGAPO

Part of the Earth Hour celebration was a fashion show highlighting recycled materials by locally-renowned designer Mr. James O’Briant.
SM City Olongapo joined  the environmental campaign to foster awareness on the global issue of climate change, the Earth Hour, held on March 23, 2013 at 8:30 in the evening at its 7th floor (roofdeck).
The impressive result of Earth Hour observance shows the stakeholders willingness to do their part in saving our planet. The malls participation  includes switching off 100% of  the Malls lighted logos, 50% of Mall interior lights and perimeter lights including tenants lightings while  remaining open to loyal patrons.
The switching off of lights happened at exactly 8:30pm with the presence of local politicians, Rotaract Club of Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Water Bonsai Inventor and Environmentalist Edwin Dela Torre and supporters, Brgy. Sta Rita Chairman Jerome Bacay, mall tenants, affiliates, agency personnel and mallgoers.
SM Olongapo Asst. Mall Manager Engr. Junias Eusebio highlighted in his speech the environmental programs of SM Supermalls that focus on efficient business and environmental stewardship. “Our monthly “Trash to Cash Recycling Market” every 1st Friday and Saturday of the month is provided for our customers and the community at large  to properly recycle and reduce  their wastes,” Eusebio said“Our malls are not only equipped with resource saving measures but also serves as venue for environment information and education awareness campaigns. We operate our malls in environmentally responsible ways that engage both our customers and stakeholders.”
SM hopes to significantly contribute to the total reduction in the use of consumable energy and thus, impact the overall goal of  Earth Hour for this year.
According to research, the Philippines has been heeding  the Earth Hour call  in the last four years and ranks as the most participative Earth Hour country.
Earth Hour, a project of  Worldwide Fund for Nature in cooperation with the Department of Energy is a lights out movement that seeks to raise awareness about climate change and its impact on the planet. (PR-SMOL)
