GUIDE TO SCHOLASTIC CHESS – Part II
This is the second of my three-part Guide to Scholastic Chess.
WHERE? If you are a teacher, you have your own classroom and that is the right place to start your first meeting and may become the permanent meeting place for the club. If the room is not suitable because of lack of chairs and tables, see if the school library is free at the time of your club meeting and set it there. It is important to scout for an available room for the club where you can store your chess equipment, tournament and club records and other supplies. Secure a closet or cabinet to be safer.
WHY? Studies show that chess help students attain academic focus. It increases the academic grades of students through educational ideals such as abstract and critical thinking, planning, logical decisions, and analysis. These things come from chess and are useful in their concentration on their studies.
It also teaches the value of good sportsmanship. Whatever reason one has for organizing an scholastic chess group, the excitement and happiness in the eyes of students when they win their first tournament is the most important.
While they are enjoying, they are also learning! On my third and last part of this Scholastic Chess Guide, we are going to tackle WHEN? and HOW?
