Hanjin Construction Workers Training on Basic Safety and Health

SUBIC, Zambales — A total of 150 construction workers based in the Subic Shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries Corporation (HHIC) Philippines recently attended training on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

“The attendees, consisting of Filipinos, Koreans and Romanians, represent the first batch of the required 10% total workforce of the company’s three sub-contractors namely SPoint, Subicor and Rebay which need to undergo BOSH for Ship Building pursuant to Department Circular No.1, Series of 2009,” DOLE Regional Director Raymundo Agravante said.

Synerquest Management Consultancy Services Inc., a DOLE-accredited Safety Training Organization, was commissioned to facilitate the activity through Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) recognized-consultants/practitioners Engr. Robert Rubina and Engr. Lauro Canceran.

Topics discussed included Overview of HHIC-Philippines’ Basic safety rules and regulations; Major accidents and fatalities and its basic causes; Root cause analysis and controls recommended; Common unsafe acts and conditions in HHIC; Overview of OSH Standards and other OSH Laws; Duties and responsibilities of employers and employees; Occupational Health Hazard (e.g. Physical, Chemical, etc.); Industrial Safety Hazards (Electrical, Mechanical, Fire); Common safety practices on work at confined spaces; personal protective equipment use and care; 5S and good housekeeping; and basic emergency response.

“Participants likewise took part in several workshops such as site walk-through with trainers and assistants; risk assessment; Behavior-Based Safety & Values Formation; Re-entry program and Commitment; and Course Evaluation with Post-test,” Agravante added. (CLJD/RBRP-PIA 3)
