SM Foundation 40th Farmers Training Program in Olongapo City


The 40th Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers’ Training Program of SM Foundation Inc. has started in Waterdam Road Block 27 Extension, Barangay Gordon Heights, Olongapo City recently.
SM Foundation Inc. Assistant Vice President for Livelihood and Outreach Program Cristie Angeles led the ceremonial transplanting of seedlings, with Harbest Agri Corp. President Arsenio Barcelona, Olongapo City Mayor James Gordon, Jr., First Lady and SBMA Director Anne Marie Gordon, City Supervising Agriculturist Jhobal Sebarrotin, Barangay Chairman Jose Thomas Madria and SM City Assistant MaIl Manager Renalin Briones.
The city government of Olongapo with the help of Mayor Gordon through Jhobal Sebarrotin thanked SM Foundation for initiating the training program in the city.
The 3-month training program aims to provide sustainable livelihood program to marginalized farmers with once a week session that entails both classroom briefings on technology and actual field practice.
Aside from teaching the farmer- participants the rudiments of vegetable farming like land and crop selection, seed sowing, plant nutrition, pest control and farm management, trainees are also taught accounting principles in farming, the importance of record keeping, financial reports, credit facilities available to farmers and marketing.
To date, 4,091 farmers have graduated from the training program since it started in 2007 in Bacolod City.(PR-SMOL)
