Mallgoers had the rare opportunity to view the award winning film of internationally acclaimed film director Brillante Mendoza and met the filmmaker up close during the Brillante Mendoza Film Appreciation workshop at SM City Olongapo Cinemas on February 18-19, 2016. The festival showcased the newest film of Director Mendoza entitled “Taklub” through a film appreciation workshop which offered an in depth view of the making of a masterpiece from Direk Mendoza’s point of view.

Taklub is a story of three major characters – Bebeth, Larry, and Erwin, whose lives intertwine after the Supertyphoon Haiyan caused the city of Tacloban in a horrendous state – leaving the survivors in search for their dead ones, keeping their sanity intact, and protecting what little faith there might be.

The film premiered at the Un Certain Regard section in last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was in the official selection. And more than that it won the Ecumenical Jury prize-special mention at the Cannes Film Festival. Moreover, Director Mendoza is now a festival director of Sinag Maynila which he co-founded with Solar Entertainment Corporation CEO and President Wilson Tieng.

Prior to the screening, SM Olongapo hosted a press launch for Director Mendoza to thank the members of media, as well as the schools and the people who supported the event.

No less than Olongapo City Vice Mayor Rodel Cerezo attended the event. Other guests included DENR-CENRO Officer Atty. Marife Castillo, OIC Asst. Schools Division Superintendent Samson Buqueron, City Tourism Officer Fifi Legaspi, Olongapo City National High School, Special Program in the Arts Coordinator Nimpa Ramos and members of the local media.

The highlight of the event was during the Film Appreciation Workshop wherein Director Mendoza showed the students the “scenes behind the film”. He also gave some lecture on the Elements of Film and ended with an Open Forum.

The Festival partnered with Olongapo City National High School, Regional Science High School and Kalalake National High School.
