World’s largest floating book fair re-opens in Subic

The world’s largest floating book fair, Logos Hope, will visit Subic Bay Freeport for the second time from November 20 until December 2 to bring knowledge, help, and hope to people especially children wherein books are priced at its lowest.

There is an entrance fee of P10 and visiting hours will be from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m., Tuesdays until Sunday, said Rahel Von Rotz, Logos Hope Project coordinator.

“Apart from the book fair, we will also hold cultural programs wherein visitors will witness the performances of our crew members from various countries,” she added.

Logos will be displaying over 5,000 books on literature, art, philosophy, and technology. Early this year they visited this province wherein they accommodated over 33,000 visitors from March 16 – April 8.

On its website, the purpose of the said ship is “To bring knowledge, help, and hope to the people of the world.”  “Over 42 million people in more than 150 different countries have walked up one of our ship’s gangway to visit one of our floating book fairs.

For many, it is their first-ever opportunity to purchase good quality literature at a fraction of its retail value.”  More than 10 million children have visited the book fair and there’s more to it than books.

The ship has a lifeboat theater, history of GBA ships section, book fair per se, an area on the journey of the Prodigal Son wherein images are seen, kid’s area, the international cafe, comment section wherein people could post their reactions on their experience on the ship, and HIV awareness campaign area.

Its captain, Tom Dyler, said during his first visit in the country, “I like being in the Philippines. You have a very positive cheerful spirit. Anywhere in the world that you go, when you find a Filipino community, there is so much joy. We are very thankful to be here.”

Logos Hope is a non-profit educational charity. It has 400 crew composed of 45 different nationalities and all are without remuneration, “even the Captain is not paid.”
