NO Plastic Bag Day for Mallgoers
SM Supermarket of SM Olongapo has launced its “My Own Bag” (MOB) campaign in compliance to City Ordinance No. 11, series of 2015, also known as the Zero Plastic Policy.
The campaign aims to enjoin shoppers to bring their own eco-friendly bags every Wednesday, similar to the eco bags sold in SM, cloth bags (katsa) and other similar materials to regulate the use of plastics as packaging materials. SM has paper bags and boxes for bulk purchases.
The ordinance seeks to reduce, if not totally eliminate, the use of plastic film bags as packaging materials.
Supermarket personnel observed that most shoppers are receptive to the campaign which commenced this month, July, as an experimental enforcement and will run until the end of August 2016.
Thereafter, a 2-day plastic ban, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, will commence on September 1, 2016 and will last up to December 31, 2016.
Beginning January 1, 2017, will be the full implementation of the city ordinance which will be strictly applied to all commercial establishments in Olongapo.
MOB is just one of the many programs of SM Supermalls.
The CSR arm of SM Prime Holdings Incorporated, SM Cares under the Environment Committee, has other projects, including the Trash to Cash recycling market held in the malls every first Friday and Saturday of the month, the Green Retail Agenda Forum for mall tenants, contractors, suppliers, students, as well as communities, the Green Film Festival and the SM Supermalls Green Bag or Eco Bag.(PR-SMOL)
