Clark hosting first APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting
CLARK FREEPORT — Preparations are now in full swing in Clark for the Freeport’s hosting of the first Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) of the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit from January 26-February 7.
“The meeting of the economic experts here will showcase Clark not just an ideal hub for pleasure but more importantly for business,” Clark Development Corporation President Arthur Tugade said.
“Clark is conducive for business because of its people, policies/processes, its landscape, and more importantly because you can create what they call a supply chain community here – and that is an A1-A1 good for business,’’ Tugade added.
Hotels such as Oxford, Widus, Holiday Inn, and Stotsenberg as well as Montevista Villas-Mimosa Golf & Country Club have undertaken expansion efforts and other improvements to ensure a favorable environment for tourists and delegates alike.
In Fontana, Chief Executive Officer Manuel Sequiera disclosed that it has already blocked 131 villas and will close 60 more for the SOM this month.
“We have completed all 19 new villas and already in the process of finalizing the three story villas we call mansion. Landscaping of gardens, retrofitting and repainting of walls, ceilings and buildings were all finished. Maybe a few more polishing on some parts but we’re good to go,’’ Sequiera said.
“Our old convention center is there and has been repainted and reorganized; the new one is being finalized and will be ready by APEC. We will be hosting every day and we expect to serve around 1,700,” he added.
The Fontana boss said security has been beefed up with CCTV cameras positioned in the hotel’s entrances and exits and the VIP mansion.
The company had also purchased four brand new cars to augment its existing 26 vehicles that will be used to transport tourists and delegates who may want to travel to nearby areas and even Metro Manila.
“We will prepare all kinds of foods for the delegates. We hope to serve every country with their local cuisine. We also designed the menu for them. We have a new kitchen designed with three walls. This will guarantee hot meals served at the function rooms. So, every small detail has been organized,” Sequiera furthered.
APEC began as an informal dialogue group in 1989, but has since become the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Philippines, as its current chair, will be hosting throughout the year and in key economic and tourist sites including Metro Manila, Clark, Tagaytay, and Boracay a number of meetings of Senior Officials (Cabinet Undersecretaries and Assistant Secretaries) and Ministers (Cabinet Secretaries) prior to its conclusion in November with an Economic Leaders’ Meeting that shall be participated by Heads of State and Government.
Apart from the Philippines, other members of APEC include Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People’s Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; The Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States of America; and Viet Nam.
