ABUCAY, Bataan— In a bid to give shelter to the homeless in Abucay town, nation-building movement Gawad Kalinga (GK) discussed recently with Mayor Ana Santiago the 5,000 Heroes Run slated January 18 next year.

The run aims to raise funds and awareness about the housing program of GK in Abucay and help relocate 57 informal settling families in the public cemetery.

Santiago said the municipal government has been constantly finding ways to help homeless families and improve their quality of living.

“It is hard to give homes to the people but there are institutions willing to help us in our goal of sheltering the needy,” she said.

According to Julius Caubat, GK Central Luzon area coordinating team delegate, the plan is to help relocate the families from the cemetery to the GK Village in Brgy. Gabon.

“The cemetery is for the dead. It should not be a home for the living,” Caubat said.

In the GK Village, about 30 families are currently residing in houses built free by GK volunteers. The village has a complete community setup of homes, water and electric supply, recreation area, agricultural site, and land for further development.

The 5,000 Heroes Run enjoins students, professionals and officials from all over the province to raise funds to build houses. A registration fee of P20 is set for the students and P100 for regular participants.

The run will start at 5 am in the Abucay municipal hall going to the GK Village in Brgy. Gabon, covering about five kilometers.

Registration forms can be acquired at the Office of the Municipal Mayor. Accomplished registration forms together with the registration fee must be submitted to the Office of the Municipal Mayor, Abucay Municipal Hall, Bataan on or before January 10, 2014. Please look for Ms. Cleo Dela Cruz.
