On Environment & Education: Keppel Cares

Keppel Subic Shipyard and Keppel Batangas Shipyard were, again, at the forefront of the annual implementation of the Dept. of Education’s (DepEd) “Brigada Eskuwela,” an annual National School Maintenance week in preparation for the class opening.

“Activities like this underscore Keppel’s commitment in nurturing communities by providing an environment that is conducive to learning,” said Leong Kok Weng, president of Keppel Subic Shipyard, who, himself, led some 100 volunteers from Keppel composed of executives, managers, supervisors and rank and file employees.

The delegation conducted minor repair works on classroom furniture and cleaned the school grounds of seven public schools. At least eight (8) other learning institutions received cash donations, painting and cleaning materials.

“We thank Keppel for its unwavering support to Brigada Eskuwela. The students will enjoy learning in their clean and newly painted classrooms and facilities,” remarked Emiteria B Villamor, principal of Manghinao Elementary School in Bauan, Batangas.

Meanwhile, Keppel Subic and Keppel Batangas Shipyards joined the nation in the observance of World Environment Day.

In Batangas, Keppel partnered with Bolo Gulibay San Miguel Elementary School, Manghinao Elementary School and Bauan Technical High School for tree planting activities with students and faculty members.

No less than 120 tree saplings were planted inside the school grounds.

“Our students are thrilled to be part of this global activity. We thank Keppel for transforming environmental concerns into concrete individual learning experience for the kids,” said Mrs Bibinia B Ilao, principal of Bolo Gulibay San Miguel Elementary School.

“With this year’s international theme of “Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet. Consume with Care,” everyone has a role to play in changing the mindset through initiatives in favor of the environment, said Agnes Barbara L. Lorenzo, SVP – Finance and Admin. of Keppel Philippines Marine, Inc. (KPMI) who led a team during the activity.

Keppel Batangas Shipyard also held an on-the-spot poster-making contest with 20 yard employees taking part in rendering their artistic interpretation on how the shipyard and community members can work together for environmental protection and conservation.
