ROTARY SUBIC BAY SUNRISE MANGROVE TREE PLANTING
Subic Bay Freeport- In coordination with SBMA Ecology Center , Rotary Club of Subic Bay Sunrise launched its 1st Mangrove Tree Planting Project at Malawaan mangrove forest in Subic Bay freeport .
A total of 88 mangrove seedlings were successfully planted on an early sunny morning of September 17, 2015 done by almost 40 participants from local aeta community , group of cyclists and Rotarians.
The event started off with a short briefing to the participants led by SBMA Ecology Center Senior Management Specialist Rhea Jane Mallari on the importance, safety and technique of mangrove planting.
According to Lamberto Castillo, President of RCSB Sunrise “ We are committing ourselves to protect and support mangrove forest regeneration. Our club will make it as an annual project beginning this year”.
Mangrove conservation is important in the fight against climate change, and not just because mangroves can slow storm surges and prevent erosion it also provides a habitat for birds , nursery and breeding grounds for marine life like shells, fish and crabs.
Castillo closed his message by saying, “This worthy community project will not be a reality without the active participation of all members of RC Subic Bay Sunrise whose agility and talent made our community project without doubt, a rewarding experience and something to be proud of as Rotarian and be ” A GIFT TO THE WORLD.”
