SAND SPILL CAUSES TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE

The driver of a 10-wheeler dump truck lost control of his vehicle, and after falling on its side, spilled tons of its sand cargo all over a portion of the national highway at Kalaklan, Olongapo City on Monday morning.

The incident caused a great number of motorists and commuters to be late for work and business transactions.
“Natumba ang truck sa kaliwang bahagi at saka tumama sa kasalubong na mini (passenger) bus na patungong norte sa Zambales” said driver Israel Nechaldas of San Isidro, Subic, Zambales,
Authorities who responded immediately were forced to close half of the highway to traffic, allowing vehicles to pass alternately from both directions.
Shovelling the sand into sacks, volunteers manually cleared the road for traffic.
Nechaldas was rushed to James L Gordon Hospital for minor injuries in his arms while his wife, who was with him on the truck, was unhurt. The mini passenger bus sustained scratches on its side but all passengers, including the driver and conductor, escaped unscathed.
According to the responding officer, SPO3 Rene Pundavela of Olongapo City Police station 1, both sides appeared for investigation at the station and have already agreed to amicably settle damages and all necessary costs. It was unclear if the owners of the dump truck will be made to answer for anything more than that sustained by the mini paasenger bus. (Iya G. Oliva) ###
